Construction and Infrastructure

Our firm has participated in most of the major industrial projects undertaken in the Philippines. These span a range of industries from steel to power to mass transit to telecommunications to water, and cover all aspects of project work from the bidding phase to financial closing, and through to implementation and operation.

The firm assumed prominence in infrastructure and construction work in the ‘80s, when it assisted the government in its industrialization program, involving the setting up of a steel manufacturing plant, a phosphate fertilizer processing plant and a copper smelting facility. In the latter part of the decade, the firm became the leader in infrastructure work under build-operate-transfer and variant arrangements, particularly in the electricity sector. The firm was counsel to the developer of the first power facility to be undertaken under this scheme, and even before the enactment of the law encouraging private sector investment in infrastructure projects through build-operate-transfer arrangements.

The firm’s infrastructure practice has since grown to include work on the first private light rail transit project in the country. It represented both developers and financiers of telecommunications projects during the growth of the industry in the mid-‘90s. It has advised developers of water supply projects and has gained particular expertise in dealings with municipal water districts. The firm also has involvement in toll road and airport terminal projects.
