SyCipLaw is asiaLaw’s 2020 Philippine Law Firm of the Year

SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan was recognized as Philippine Law Firm of the Year in the asialaw Awards 2020. The awards body advises that the awards seek to recognize legal excellence among leading law firms in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on 10 practice areas, 7 industries, and 25 jurisdictions.

SyCipLaw also bagged “Banking and Financial Services Firm of the Year”, and Client Service Excellence Award Firm of the Year (Philippines). Partner Marievic G. Ramos-Añonuevo was named “Lawyer of the Year: Philippines”.

Two projects the firm worked on were also recognized -- the International Finance Corporation (IFC) $90 million Philippine Green Bonds and Grab’s acquisition of Uber in South East Asia were awarded “Impact Deal/Case of the Year”.

Not only are the IFC Green Bonds the first green bonds issued by the IFC, they are also the first green bonds issued in the Philippines. They are, furthermore, the first Philippine-peso denominated bonds issued by a multilateral development institution. The proceeds of these “Mabuhay Bonds” are intended to finance the clean energy initiatives of one of the largest power generation companies in the Philippines.

Grab’s acquisition of Uber deal has been touted as the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, and highlights the economic and social importance of the ride-hailing industry.
