Highlights: ELA Asia Pacific Client Conference
SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan hosted the Employment Law Alliance (ELA) Asia Pacific Client Conference last March 13, 2018. The meeting was attended by 57 representatives from 26 Philippine companies, and by 27 representatives from ELA member firms in China, Guam, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The Conference opened after lunch with remarks from SyCipLaw’s Luisito V. Liban, who heads the firm’s Employment and Immigration Department; Shearn Delamore & Co.’s Sivabalah Nadarajah, and Deacons’ Cynthia Chung. The Philippine Department of Labor and Employment’s Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III was the keynote speaker.
The first panel session was on handling cross-border employment issues and featured Deacons’ Elsie Chan, Price Sanond’s Stephen Helwig, Lee Tsai & Partners’ Elizabeth Pai, DFDL’s Huynh Dai Thang, JunHe LLP’s Jeffrey Wilson, and SSEK’s Fahrul Yusuf, with SyCipLaw’s Amer Hussein N. Mambuay moderating.
The next panel session was on social media & the workplace. Mr. Nadarajah and Ms. Chung were joined by JunHe LLP’s Yimu Bu, Camacho Calvo Law Group’s Vincent Camacho, Wong Partnership’s Jenny Tsin, and SyCipLaw’s Dante T. Pamintuan in discussing the regulation of employees’ activities within and outside the workplace.
The last session focused on gender sensitivity in the workplace. SyCipLaw’s Rodelle B. Bolante moderated the session composed of John Wilson Partners’ Ruwani Dantanarayana, Trilegal’s Atul Gupta, DFDL’s Danyel Thomson, JunHe LLP’s Jeffrey Wilson, and Ushijima & Partners’ Rikisuke Yamanaka.
The Conference took place at the New World Hotel and concluded with a cocktail reception.
