WLG Spring Conference 2016

World Law Group Thailand member firm Chandler and Thong-Ek Law Offices hosted the 2016 World Law Group Spring Conference on April 28-30, 2016.

Current WLG President Swee-Kee Ng from Malaysian firm Shearn Delamore & Co. and current WLG Asia-Pacific Regional Director Jessada Sawatdipong of Chandler & Thong-Ek welcomed 98 delegates and 32 guests Chiang Mai, Thailand for the WLG’s 56th semi-annual conference.

One plenary session featured a timely discussion on cyber-security during which a hacking demonstration was conducted followed by break-out session to discuss how law firms should handle a breach of their systems and what protocols and protections should be in place to help avoid and react to information breaches. Other plenary sessions tackled the lessons of the privatization experience of Thailand, the implications of the Trans-Pacific Partnership for ASEAN countries, the challenges faced by firms relating to governance and succession and an exchange of ideas and best practices for working with business associations.

SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan is the exclusive Philippine member firm of the WLG. Senior Partner Mia G. Gentugaya and Partner Arlene M. Maneja attended the conference on behalf of the firm.

Ms. Maneja also actively participated in the practice group meeting of the Antitrust and Competition Group, which dealt with updates on merger control issues in Southeast Asia. Panelists included representatives from Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Ms. Maneja shared recent developments relating to the implementation of the recently enacted Philippine Competition Act, including the issuance of transitory rules on merger notification for transactions to be consummated after the effectivity of the law but before the effectivity of its implementing rules and regulations.
